nike swatch changed to say "slavery".cartoon showing a shoper unaware of sweatshops.

its amazing that many people havn't seen this satire, yet there is none more pithy.

start with the quote from president lincoln and it's explanation, then come  back.

"we decided to live with workers in their village and restrict ourselves to their wages – 1.25 a day. in one month leslie lost 15 pounds and jim lost 25 pounds. we lived in a 9x9 cement box with no furniture and no air conditioning in the sweltering tropical climate. we slept on thin mats. the floor has a constant layer of ash and grit from burning garbage, factory pollution and car exhaust. the toilets drained into open sewers on both sides of every street. the village was infested with fist-sized cockroaches and the biggest rats i have ever seen. if we want soap or toothpaste we had to eat less. you work 8am to 8pm monday through saturday, and sometimes sunday, not including travel time or preparation. you spend 30-45 minutes a day doing laundry by hand, your clothes are visibly dirty at the end of the day, and you have not bought new clothes in two years. if you’re a woman, when you menstruate you will still get the allotted two bathroom breaks a day. you can feel the tired in your bones. we spoke to people who produced for

Nike, Adidas, Reebok, The Gap, Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo/Ralph Lauren, Lotto, Fila, and Levi’s."

“[things] are no better for workers now than they were in 2000, despite Nike’s attempt to make the public think otherwise. workers are still forced to make decisions like ‘eat or let my child eat.’ the last time we were in indonesia, a nike factory worker whom we had interviewed since 2000 and who had worked in a Nike factory for eight years came to greet us. she gave us a solemn hug, a strained half-smile and said forcefully, ‘nothing’s changed.’ the women and men working 6-7 days a week for multi-billion dollar corporations are sometimes forced to eat rice and salt for their two meals a day. in the 1990s Nike responded to criticism by saying critics didn’t know what they were talking about, and factories were subcontracted, therefore [it was out of their hands.] by 2002 Nike executives were following us around the US at the colleges and high schools where we gave lectures. meanwhile, the same problems, starvation wages, bathroom breaks limited twice a day, verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, threats and threats to union organizers continue in Nike factories around the world."

from an email from
leslie and jim
filmmakers who tried
living like Nike workers

they told of a dark night when they, their cameraman, and their indonesian driver and translator were chased down by a group of armed thugs. “they surrounded our car on motorcycles. our driver raced to a nearby army post, but the soldier waved us through. he wasn’t about to cross these guys, the equivalent of the indonesian mafia. we were hustled out of the car at gunpoint and pushed around.” they survived but their driver was severely beaten.

A.
tedious and dangerousinterlocking board memberships

linked below is a highly selective collection of paragraphs and diagrams from a deadly tedious government report that was motivated by single a congressman and that in its entirety, largely consisting of lists of names arranged under various categories, came to almost a thousand pages. we should receive a medal for wading through this junk out of the goodness of our little hearts.

the paragraphs are from a report done in 1978 on the subject of interlocking board memberships of america’s largest 130 companies, either directly or through executives sitting together on intermediate boards. the main graph, the graph of purely financial institutions, and two graphs of industrial types were excerpted as typical. where boxes contain a diagonal slash, the number below the line indicates indirect connections.

extremely relevant background factoids are:

  • while this report was done in 1978, no MAJOR report, meaning one that had resulted in ACTION, had been done since 1913, at which time new laws had been enacted to prevent monopolies.
  • the types of financial interlocking were listed as: (1) joint ventures, (2) mergers, (3) stock ownership, (4) debt relationships, (5) contractual arrangements, and (6) interlocking board memberships
  • the report covers ONLY (6) - interlocking board memberships. it also did not examine subsidiaries or affiliates.
  • the categories of businesses where: industrials, commercial banks, life insurance, diversified financial, transportation, retailing, and investment advisors.
  • notice that four out of seven of these largest companies essentially do nothing but juggle money.
  • the greatest proportion of interlocks was between financial institutions and industry.
  • beginning in 1913 and greatly accelerating toward 1978, a new trend had emerged in business consisting of: (1) interlocking boards, (2) mergers, and (3) multi-national corporations.
  • ALMOST NO FEDERAL AGENCY EVEN COLLECTED DATA on corporate inter-connections.
  • where data was collected, it was largely from PUBLICLY AVAILABLE SOURCES.
  • where further data on these SIMPLE FACTS was requested
SUBPOENAS WHERE NECESSARY,
which resulted in
CONTRACTED LEGAL BATTLES.
  • terminology in existing laws is SO VAGUE that enforcment is in many cases literally
IMPOSSIBLE.
  • while at several times congress considered new laws, it was largely a fanfare of speeches, public statements, and forming of committees, AND NO NEW LAWS WERE ENACTED.
selected quotes:
  • an endless chain of connections forming a power elite.”
  • the few laws enacted had merely conferred respectabilityonto huge monopolies.
  • suppression of competition”. “special channels of communication”, “preferential treatment”, “unjust enrichment.”
  • influence employee rights, compensation and job conditions,” and “policies [on] the environment, [and] social issues.”
  • federal agencies had no system for data or analysis,” and none could provide…information.”
  • the department of defense exhibited extraordinary indifference to monopolies.
  • the companies examined were not only very large but were
maybe far more concentrated than it has been presumed to be,”

and may influence government policies.”

B.
CORPORATOCRACY

O.K. FOLKS - IT'S "READ MY LIPS" TIME - TURN OFF THE TV.

it is shown below and on page # 8 - "military" - that war is always about economics.
many examples were given of the so called "free world" plundering the rest of the planet.
this is only purpose, as described on page # 6, of the "world trade organization", the "international monitary fund," and the "world bank."
THERE IS A NEW GAME IN TOWN.
as the above section indicates, corporate conglomerates have become
MUCH LARGER THAN THE PUBLIC IS AWARE OF.
before, governments and corporation worked hand in glove.
the little people had no idea of the massive influence of companies.
or how their lives are literally endangered.
the new truth is that
NATIONS ARE OBSOLETE.
corporations span the world.
this is the only real thing - everything else is a smoke screen. they don’t look like governments, but there’s always an economic policy,” a term used to confer RESPECTIBILITY, as if they were a government with public concerns, behind which is an UNENDING DESIRE for more and more profit.

the corporatocracy – is composed of combined
business, government, and media.
the credo is:
SECRECY ABOVE ALL ELSE.
while they teach you to scoff at “conspiracies.”

THE NEW ORDER
•    there is a revolving door between business and government.
•    there are no ELECTIONS and no TERMS OF SERVICE.
•    wholly artificial, lying, “negotiated” economic forecasts are THE MAJOR tool of EMPIRE.

“economic forecasts are stronger than the swords of crusaders.”

•    economic hit men pave the way for corporations. if they are unsuccessful, jackals arrange assassinations or coups - to the cry of “drugs, communists, and subversive foreign aid.”
•    greedy rulers are subverted with personal wealth, who give the people no say, and let companies have their way.
•    under the guise of “help”, debts are incurred which are impossible to repay.

THE UGLY SIDE
•    in “small” wars, war is spurred on and prolonged – so that arms sales and unregulated businesses in war zones have free reign – mining, oil and gas.
•    in “official” wars, the WAR MACHINE is a SUCCESS WHETHER OR NOT a war is won, which is why failed policies are not changed.
•    NATURAL DISASTER are like wars – PROFITABLE – with nothing for the poor.
•    corporations back up central control by the official, rightful governments – even when rebels are fighting a desperate battle against BRUTAL OPPRESSION.
•    national militaries the world over are owned by multinationals.

THE DETAILS
•    it looks so beneficent when debts are “forgiven,” but there is NEVER ANY getting out from under.
•   restructuring is required of the recipient nation in order to “stabilize the economy,” but this really only ensures a permanently poor workforce.  as is described on page # 6 - "w.t.o./i.m.f./world bank,"  the main requirements for loans are cutting funds for education and social services - including HEALTH, and raising rates for basic needs.
•    aid is ALWAYS designed after western economic structures, where large corporations,
•    on the SUCCESSFUL WESTERN practice
•    make the decisions FOR governments and reap ALL the profits.
•    no matter what the local conditions and culture, the emphasis is on infra-structure”:
•    roads
•    power
•    mass agriculture
•    mass transportation – harbors, shipping, trucking, railroads
•    industries that produce for an international market
•    these are all things that turn a profit for the “helping” companies.
•    when policies fail, the roads and power are there for the next step in exploiting the country.
•    ROADS are central to exploiting natural resources. they allow the movement of HEAVY MACHINERY and RAW MATERIALS, whether going in
OR out, and are of NO USE to the poor residents.

THE LONG TERM EFFECTS
•    there is a clear, long HISTORICAL RECORD of RAPING THE LAND.
•    the natural landscape is DEVASTED: land is turned BARE, FORESTS are DESTROYED, WATERSHEDS POISONED, ecologies and animal habitats millions of years old are PERMANENTLY disrupted.
•    people are TORN FROM THEIR ROOTS, utterly destroying ENTIRE CULTURES – but this is called relocating for their own benefit.”

•    CRISES
policies have a failure rate of at least FITY PERCENT – while always MAKING PROFITS.

in the 1997 an imf crises was caused by its own policies. south korea, thailand, indonesia, laos, and the philippines were devastated and left in massive debt. cruelly, the poor of these countries were left even poorer. the analysis of their micro-economies is not difficult. having begun on a subsistence level, basic needs – food, fuel, and water - are now more expensive.

the “rescue plan” of “structural aid adjustment” deliberately let local businesses fail.

this caused a recession in europe, south america, and the usa. those countries who rejected the plan did best – china, india, taiwan, singapore, and malaysia switched course and regained ground.

MADNESS IS SUPPORTED BY INDIFFERENCE
corporations are dependant on:
•    public subsidies
•    exemptions
•    massive advertising
•    massive lobbying
•    complex transportation
•    complex communication
while executives receive, for managing this MAGIC SHOW:
•    inflated salaries
•    perks
•    golden retirement parachutes
•    tax deductions

all underwritten by taxpayers, or in other words, suckers.
underneath it all is the indifference of the common people, who have not yet learned to look beyond their three square meals a day to the brutal source of their prosperity.

•    NGOs - WELL MEANING FOOLS - “teaching farmers to farm.”
NGOs, “non-governmental agencies,” are a rising force in world affairs, but are part of the scheme, consciously or otherwise. they create publicity that forestalls real peace, are arrogant, waste money, and spread an illusion of concern when little is accomplished. they have less knowledge than local people about what is needed or practical,

the majority of programs are not requested, initiated or managed by locals, but are run by highly paid foreigners that live apart from the local population.

they do not recognize or attempt to remedy the MOST MAJOR FACTORS in people's economic lives:
•    EXPOITIVE UPPER CLASSES and RULERS
•    UNFAIR TRADE POLICIES.

farmers are persuaded to change from traditional to cash crops, then they become dependant on foreign fertilizers, pesticides and seeds. collective farm organizations are often owned by foreigners.

an example: aid groups even worked with the world wide giant monsanto to change mali’s constitution to allow GMOs, then subsidies to american farmers destroyed mali’s market.

EXAMPLES
•    the atmosphere of latin america
•    paraguay shelters nazis.
•    bolivia is worse than ecuador for native peoples. like suharto, its leaders both invest and bank a fortune in the usa and europe, while letting the multinationals plunder the country.
•    columbia is a centerpiece of corporatocracy success, with an entirely mercenary army.
•    in december 1989 panama, a country without an army, is attacked, and two thousand people die, and whole neighborhoods are destroyed yet never receive aid to rebuild. noriega’s files were deliberately bombed. he had refused to let the usa reinstate the school of the americas – an institution that trains central and south american agents in propaganda, insurgency and torture.

“that’s a good one,” he chortled, “we’ll have to get the
word out that we can arrange slow deaths.”

•    all of these presidents were assassinated or overthrown by the CIA:
•    guatemala – arbenez
•    brazil – goulart
•    bolivia – estensorro
•    chili -  allende
•    equador – roldos
•    panama - torrijos
•    guatamala
in the 1950s jacob arbenez instituted land reforms, where before 3 percent of the population had owned 70 percent of the land. the major interest in the area was United Fruit, which drove a massive publicity campaign to both the people and congress of the usa, claiming communism was immanent. in 1953 the CIA orchestrated a coup, american planes bombed the capitol, and the right wing colonel carlos castilla was installed. he began a brutal crack down, jailing thousands, and reversed all land policies. in the 1980s 100,000 people died in an attempted revolution.

“if bechtel wants a job, don’t even bother to bid.”
– an executive from a different company

•    in cochabamba, third largest city of bolivia, which has some of latin america’s poorest residents, the water contract was granted to just one company – bechtel.  some water rates rose 300 PERCENT, while people were LEGALLY PROHITED FROM GATHERING RAINWATER. riots ensued, and bechtel demanded protection for facilities and personnel, but the president nullified the contract.

for more examples, some pretty hideous, from a collection of essential passages from the book "the secret history of the american empire,"

WAL-MART - a microcosm of the IMF/WorldBank
try to keep in mind that these are not abstractions, that all these facts apply to just a single corporation.

contents of this section:
sick and scary
two points
regarding size
regarding employees
union busting, massive abuse and massive suits
george bush fires the prosecutorshades of watergate
off the clock
just general bastards
a real humdinger

sick and scary
next time you hear someone say, well, they’re cheap,” remind them of all these facts. there’s a really good reason why their products are cheap. this is not only not a joke, it is really SICK and SCARY. these people have NO CONSCIENCE whatsoever. is this the way THE WHOLE WORLD will go?

two major points:
1.    it is not just that wal-mart is a business behemoth of a size never seen before, but that in doing so IT SIMULTAINIOUSLY PROMULGATES THE TRASHIEST FORM OFCULTURE. food, clothing, entertainment, and home goods are in the poorest taste and horribly made.

2.    wal-mart, like most mega-corporations, is not just competitive or cost cutting, but in their employees relations are TOTAL BASTARDS, employing practices that are both INSIDIOUS and TOALLY ILLEGAL.
•    by extension, this applies to THEIR SUPPLIERS, who employ people who are already the poorest in the nation.
•    by extension overseas, this applies to SWEAT SHOPS.
– or in other words –
SLAVERY.
•    this whole scheme could exist ONLY WITH GOVERNMENT COLLUSION.

regarding size
•    walm-mart is the LARGEST CORPORATION IN THE WORLD. it is larger than General Motors and ExxonMobil combined.
•    it made 250 BILLION DOLLARS in 2003 – 7 BILLION in PROFIT.
•    it makes TWICE THE PROFIT of the NEXT 17 RETAILERS.
•    it sells from ONE TENTH to ONE FOURTH of the products of MAJOR USA COMPANIES.
•    wal-mart, while running ads featuring american flags and proclaiming, we buy american,” is the LARGEST IMPORTER OF CHINESE GOODS IN THE WORLD.
•    it has MOVED ITS WORLD WIDE PURCHASING HEADQUARTERS TO CHINA.
•    its CEO makes 11.5 MILLION DOLLARS in ONE YEAR.
•    of the ten richest people in the usa, FIVE ARE WALTONS, who have a combined PERSONAL WEALTH of 100 BILLION.
•    it has 4,400 stores world wide
•    it has 3,600 stores in the usa
•    it is the country’s LARGEST EMPLOYER, with 1.3 million “associates” – 1 IN EVERY 120 PEOPLE.
•    it is the nation’s LARGEST GROCERY STORE.
•    it is the largest seller of JEWELLRY, PHOTO-PROCESSING, DOG FOOD, and VITAMINS.
•    it is moving into BANKING, GASOLINE, USED CARS, TRAVEL, FLOWER DELIVERY and INTERNET ACCESS.

regarding employees
•    turnover is from 50 to 100 PERCENT A YEAR. this allows them to
ABUSE WORKERS WITHOUT FEAR OF LEGAL  ACTION.
•    every day starts with a MANDATORY PEP RALLY.
•    yet the average worker makes the POVERTY WAGE of 15,00 a year.
•    it defines full time employees as working 28 HOURS A WEEK – which nets 11,000  a YEAR.
•    there is a medical plan ONLY AFTER 2 YEARS, which involves HIGH PREMIUMS and DEDUCTABLES.
•    only  38 PERCENT OF EMPLOYEES ARE COVERED.
•    the FEW women who are managers make 16,400 DOLLARS LESS THAN MALE MANAGERS.

union busting, massive abuse and massive suits
•    the company’s “supervisors handbook” begins,
WAL-MART IS APPOSED TO UNIONIZATION.”
to quote:
this may mean walking a tightrope between legitimate campaigning and improper behavior.”

•    themanager’s toolbox to remaining union freeis given to EVERY manager, and
•    includes a TOLL FREE NUMBER for company union busters
WHO IMMEDIATELY WILL FLY TO YOUR ASSISTANCE
in private company jets.

•    wal-mart has had MORE LAWSUITS FOR DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION THAN ANY OTHER CORPORATION.
•    it has major lawsuits concerning AGE DISCRIMINATION, one of which was won with a CLEAR DECISION, but only after YEARS of litigation.
•    the National Labor Relations Board has issued OVER 40 FORMAL COMPLAINTS for the use of ILLEGAL TACTICS AGAINTS UNION FORMATION, which include:
•    spying
•    threats
•    firings

GEORGE BUSH REMOVED THE FEDERAL LAWYER
INVOLVED IN ORDER TO HALT PROSECUTION.

•    it is the subject of the
LARGEST CLASS ACTION SUIT IN THE COUNTRY.

on behalf of 1 MILLION WOMEN charging SYSTEM WIDE discrimination in PAY LEVELS and PROMOTION, which was promoted by
PRESSURE FROM THE TOP
of the organization.

off the clock
•    it uses TOTALLY ILLEGAL “OFF THE CLOCK working hours, which is DEMANDED OF THE VERY POOR UNDER THE PRESSURE OF LOSING THEIR JOB.

•    tactics include LOCKING THE DOORS SO EMPLYEES CANNOT LEAVE.

•    managers are told to FALSIFY WORK HOURS OR LOSE THEIR JOB,
•    by adjusting hours BY COMPUTER in the PAYROLL DEPARTMENT.
•    “off the clock” theft in TEXAS ALONE amounts to 300 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR.
•    there are cases pending in TWENTY FIVE STATES.
•    wal-mart has already paid 500 MILLION DOLLARS in a class action suit in colorado.
•    wal-mart paid 400,000 DOLLARS involving a suit in JUST ONE STORE in new mexico.

just general bastards
•    it pressures SUPPLIERS to cut production costs,”  which always means
•    LOWER WAGES
•    LONGER HOURS
•    for FEWER EMPLOYEES
•    and FEWER BENEFITS

•    overseas, this means to
BEAT DOWN THE SWEAT SHOP WORKERS EVEN MORE
than they are to begin with.

this NOT A VAGUE GERERALITY.
wal-mart
REGULARLY SENDS EMMISARIES
to overseas companies to pressure owners.

•    it DESTROYS WHOLE COMPANIES – throwing all their employees out of work – by:
•    OVERNIGHT cutting all orders from companies that depend on sales to wal-mart.
•    employing PREDATORY pricing to ELIMINATE COMPETITION. this is the totally illegal practice of underpricing competition.

•    it has a STANDARD POLICY of AGGRESSIVELY trying to sway ZONING BOARDS and LOCAL ELECTIONS and REFERENDUMS with a MASSIVE INPUT of CASH, LAWYERS, and ADVERTISING.

•    it influenced state highway construction near its headquarters, in what was ONCE A RURAL AREA, to build MAJOR NEWHIGHWAYS without regard to
THE ECOLOGY OR THE LOCAL RESIDENTS.

a real humdinger
•    it took out LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES on its employees WITHOUT THEIR CONSCIOUS CONSENT, the COMPANY BEING THE BENIFICIARY, and with a TAX DEDUCTION ON THE PREMIUMS.
•    consent being in convoluted legalese in the fine print of their employment contracts.
this made employees
OF MORE VALUE DEAD THAN ALIVE.
there were 350,000 SUCH POLICIES.
after a great deal of adverse publicity, it SAYS it no longer does this.

THE SCOURAGE OF POVERTY RELIEF
recently there has been a sucessful fear mongering over public assistance, along with other hideous idiocies, resulting in millions of people literally being thrown on their own into poverty.
the truth is that the many forms of welfare form  MINISCULE part of the budget.
NOW, if it just happens to be YOU that takes a fall, you are OUT OF LUCK.
the people who perpetrated this have no intention of publisizing the other side of the coin:

       corporate welfare.
                              billions of dollars
are essentially given away, through a plethora of mechanisms: tax breaks, legislation, judicial rulings.
invariably the corprations recieving this benefit are some of the largest in the country and world. this is done "to support the economy", yet
this money comes straight out of your pocket.
these actions are not in the news and no one is going to go out of their way to inform you. it's all done with favoritism and politics and you have absolutely no control over it.

in actuality, "CORPORATE WELFARE" is a term unknown to the general public, at most being heard on a random newscast of congressional hearings and then forgotten, but to the politically aware it is the major aspect of the inseparable tie between government and business. recently conservatives and the ill informed have waged a highly effective and inaccurate propaganda campaign motivating draconian cuts in social welfare programs for the very needy, portraying them as leeches draining the government literally into debt. these program actually account for a minute fraction of the budget, while simultaneously billions of dollars are given to corporations, either directly or through tax cuts. this is so obvious and well documented as a daily fact of life, yet the propaganda is so well done, that almost no one knows or cares. it sounds simple to say "tax cuts", yet we are talking about companies with hundreds of millions of dollars of profits who regularly pay almost no taxes, and who constantly scheme to pay even less. your taxes support the likes of the mining  industry, car manufacturers and heavy industry. this is not an error, oversight, or part of some economic development. there is only one word that accurately describes money taken from the hungry and given to the rich :
madness.
this is just the under story that no one pays attention to. the government increasingly uses tax monies to "bail out" industries that have been
mismanaged  or ruined by simple greed.
once again, why is it tax payers are assumed to be willing to pay the debts of a failed business? the reasoning is that it is an essential part of the economy. if a small business failed it would be just tough luck, sink or swim. but here, no one is held accountable, no one is punished, no one is fined, WHILE INDIVIDUALS MAKE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, and no change in the system is proposed!!!! THE SAME PEOPLE WHO CAUSED THE PROBLEM ARE LEFT IN POSITIONS OF POWER. we of course are referring to the most famous example, the great "savings and loan bailout", which still has its apologists. this "bailout", a beautiful joke if there ever was one,
BY ITSELF
involved
billions of dollars,
making it a
major portion of the national debt.
honesty by the book
as a single telling example consider exported wheat. international traders praise american bulk wheat for being so clean. however, regulations allow 2% foreign matter, which, after inspection, is added at the docks, by means of a conveyer belt of dirt going into ships. this is a common practice many people have been eye witnesses to.

kiss it goodbye
after labor reforms in the early twentieth century, the new post war industrial prosperity saw most large and many small companies offer their employees a pension and medical plans. what few people were aware of is that, although you had spent your life working for a company and putting your wages into a retirement plan, these plans were entirely voluntary on the companies part. now there is a whole new wave of drastic cuts in retirement and medical plans. the money you put into the plan is simply not being paid back -
                                and this is all legal.
people about to retire or who are old enough to not easily switch carreers, or who are in serious need of medical assistance, are finding themselves
                                                destitute.
people whose hair has gone completely grey find themselves accepting jobs they would have looked down on in their youth simply to put bread on the table.
I.B.M., american airlines, major regional utilities, even government agencies - to name but the most obvious recent examples - are simply telling their employees:

                                                                                 "tough luck".
so much for the wonders of democracy. and the government tells us this is a time of unprecedented prosperity.
here's an ARTICLE.

harmful, sort of.
when a product or substance is legally found to be dangerous, usually the companymaking it is allowed to finish selling its stock or to continue selling the product in other countries. this is standard.

lets start with some liturature, which a critic would say has nothing to do with facts, while the educated know art has always been a means of circumventing social strictures. noteworthy is almost the whole carreer of Charles Dickens. here is a quote from the more modest talent of Aurthur Conan Doyle in Sherlock Holmes:

                                      "...communities, cities, even nations..."

click here for the real deal.

do you think corporate assassination never happens in america?
it's so much easier than working in competition. in many countries, russia being the most obvious example, it is very common. you rarely see it in the news, yet many americans have been killed. in many countries, stories come primarily from africa and south east asia,
millions of dollars are key to obtaining contracts. this is common knowledge in the corporate subculture, and knowledgable employees commonly  refuse foreign assignments rather than risk the ire of a government or employees whose greed is unmatched even in the u.s.a. we're talking about physical danger, as in crippling or death, just for offending some employee or not "knowing the ropes."

"DEVELOPERS" ARE EVIL.
     they DESTROY LAND
like a STARVING MONSTER
and

  HOMOGINIZE CULTURE.
"DEVELOPERS" IS A TERM WHICH LITERALLY DID NOT EXIST BEFORE THE POST WORLD WAR II CREATION OF SUBURBIAS.

three points about "investment":
a culture of wolves
anyone familiar over time with the higher corporate world knows

that every last lawyer and company executive is a heartless thief and is proud of it.
it is not only the key to success, but because this attitude is prevalent, to survival itself

- the honest people are quickly weeded out.

try this for a nuclear "accident
"

do you think there was any governmental action after this incident? when the seabrook, new hampshire, nuclear power plant was being expanded one man refused to to sell his land. he goes on a trip and when he returns he finds
his entire property paved over in a "contractor's error."
the home his family has been in for generations, his farmlands and forests and streams and all his buildings and property are simply gone.

here's a "little" one for you
how many people know that the innocent and pretty balloon, when it breaks, is the major cause of choking deaths in small children? yet the industry won't add the littlest millimeter to their thickness. why bother? they'd have to retool the factories and spend more on materials and who cares about a few hundred kids a year?

you take your chances
one of the greatest changes in outdoor recreation is the now decades old introduction of "all terrain vehicles", which can't be beat for
destroying everything in their path, but the tens of thousands of people who use them don't think of that. they also flip over extremely easily, because of their very high center of balance, even in the newer redesigned models. they are totally unlicensed. because of this

there is a plague of dead and quadroplegic CHILDREN.

no company has ever been successfully sued, even though there are few warnings in massive sales campaigns.

mountain top removal
or let's go to the top - the top of mountains that is. the latest trend in mining, now almost fifty years old, is the

                                           complete destruction of whole mountains
.
its easier than digging mines, easier even than "open pit" mining that leaves gargantuan scars on the earth. simply remove the mountain from the top down, taking out everything you want in the process. there is a little screed on this in the section "from idiocy to ugliness."  what could be more arrogant? the most majestic aspects of our home planet and all the nature and life they support are being permanently destroyed for ever for a simple temporary profit.

a few major clues

entire industries remain unregulated, causing endless worker injuries and massive pollution, with absolutely no legal recourse available.
the paper industry is among the worst polluters, destroying whole towns, waterways and watersheds.

pollution?
what pollution?

pure insanity
in 2000 koch industries were indicted on  ninety seven counts for knowingly  dumping 91 metric tons of cancer causing benzene, then lying about it. all charges were dropped by president bush and attorney general ashcroft. your children will pay for this. (back to courts)

sweatshops forever
people are just beginning to realize that

sweatshops are a major part of the world economy.

but really, its just the norm.

g
the "good old days"
as said elsewhere, in the old days at - least here - if you lose a limb at work you lose your job and your family
starves. corporations never were just honest money making ventures. until the end of the 1930s, just seventy years ago, and the general acceptance of unions both male and female workers were without any protection and worked
                                            12-14 hours 6-61/2 days a week.
according to one organizer, "conservatives", meaning employers, believed "endless toil kept women out of mischief , protecting their morals," and, "if working people had bathtubs they would use them for coal," and, "workers were not supposed to have leisure time." marvin k. hart, chairman of new york state's Economic Congress argued that maximum work/minimum wage laws would "limit individual freedom."

products for your body - and you don't know what's in them
it may seem trivial, especially if you're male, but the human body is being turned into artificial market. as is said in the "vagina monologues" (see the reading list) "they're out there inventing pscho-products and nasty ideas. sorry, i don't want to smell like a springtime meadow, and what do they put in these products anyway?"  how many people realize that one of the major brands of contraceptive cream contains a nerve deadener? there is no concievable reason for it to be there.

benificent
during WWII  the coke company had an exclusive contract for ALL military bases. you can imagine the tidy profit made from "ensuring our brave servicemen can always get a coke at a cheap price."

HITTING THE NAIL ON THE THUMB
once again in the "greatest nation on earth", dubious trivia point to a larger malfeasance. nails, the simplest, most ubiquitous and  historically almost the oldest construction aid are manufactured with no industry or government standards, unlike in europe. have you ever cursed that box of nails where every one seems to bend under your hammer? how great do you think the waste is from this one source in the nation wide construction industry?

planned obsolescence

"planned obsolescence" is a term that broke into american consciousness in the late fifties when it was revealed, in both the media and congress, that many products had been deliberately designed to break down. clocks, cars, stoplights, airplanes, tools...  you name it, manufacturers have been caught giving orders at all ranks of a business, from designers to production line workers, to do the worst job possible, in order to sell more products.  this cannot be emphasized too much. do you really think if we can go to mars, map the human genome and make super computers that we can’t make light bulbs or razor blades that last forever, or cars that are more efficient? all these wonderful ideas and more have been bought up and hidden away by huge corporations. don't doubt it,there are legal records, but just try getting your congressman to listen.

car manufacturers bought up then destroyed whole municipal subway systems.
airlines overwhelmingly lobby against trains
.

the airline industry also constantly lobbys against the railroads.  there is one national passenger rail system in the u.s.a., it is constantly in debt and trains must make way, sometimes for hours, for freight trains. over in europe this is a joke.

"ENCOURAGING" PUBLIC POVERTY
when the trans-continental railroad was being built the laborers, chinese on the west arm and irish on the eastern arm, were literally

slaves,
eating repulsive food, being beaten or "disappeared" for the smallest complaint, endless hours, a fantastic rate of death from accidents and all with no escape, hundreds of miles into the wilderness. public lands were given to the railroad for free to "encourage commerce", but were levered into mineral and water rights and legal authority over towns, making cronies unbelievable fortunes.

mining

"that's granpa jones . he's ninety and has
worked in the mines for seventy years. the kid is his grandson. he says he's fourteen, but we know he's only eight.", my informant spoke matter-of-factly.

not private police.
the men were miners, empty handed, on their way to latimer  in the same state, to induce the workers there to join the strike. the sheriff met them on the public road and would not let them go on. he commanded them to return to hazelton, and when they refused he and his posse opened fire, killing 21 and wounding others. everywhere the same butchery.

                                                                                     living my life
                                                                                     emma goldman

as american economic history is taught, the striving  of miners, who were some of the first to be unionized,  for
minimal rights is commonly referred to as "the coalfield wars." war" is a very intense word to use and should make you stop and think. even today, decades after laws concerning "black lung disease" were passed, corporations
wage a CONSTANT legal battle to
redifine or relax air quality standards in mines
.

mining companies STILL FIGHT against AIR QUALITY controls, haggling over every technicality, while people lives are at stake. see the picture of the "black lung" protest near the begining of the page "resistance". these are all old men. their arm bands read, "stop murder".

drug companies

cartoon deoicting drug companies as dealers.flexner, who promoted drugs through investment.cartoon of drugs to control side effects of drugs.

drug companies are the only industry that are as insane as insurance or heavy industry and they are just as large, making monumental profits while denying life saving aid to millions of people. they are
the most important reason why medical costs are so incredibly high in america,
and they are the single strongest force opposing ANY form of socialization in medical care.
they have you over a barrel, your life being held hostage, and like it that way.  their promotion and  testing of  drugs are run like a ruthless military campaign. many doctors have been incensed at how they use "market research" techniques to promote drugs -

they get ahold of your medical records and promote their drugs.
DIRECTLY to your doctor.
they keep VAST records, in minute detail, of what doctors prescribe and to whom. “drug reps” are intensely schooled in pressuring doctors, armed with this information but without revealing it.

.article on drug company snooping.a
the truth is that while many drugs are life saving many others are just experimental, being used only with a waiver from the patient. the number of drugs is astronomical and drug companies use every trick of deception and proselytizing and skewing of research to find a profit, even where an older drug still works or a whole different type of treatment may be applicable. for many decades patients have been used as guinea pigs, either after signing a waiver or simply from being overwhelmed by institutional aura. industries and even researchers and susceptible government agencies have worked diligently to establish a norm of "acceptable side effects" for drugs. patients are put on a round robin of various drugs on the mere hope that something will work or that the side effects will be minimalized. the side effects range from
uncomfortable to horrible to permanent to death,
and you are supposed to be greatfull that you are alive even if your kidneys no longer work right or your head is permanently fuzzy. an amazing number of drugs exist only to alleviate the side effects of other drugs, especially those used for serious illness or the elderly, and then these have their own side effects. this abuse of patients' very physical integrity is institutional and will not change with a simple reprimand, guideline or well meaning impotent law.

the term in the paragraph title has become ubiquitous among protesters and those just wanting to know what they're eating. "genetically modified organisms", the term promoted by industry, are not allowed in many states if sold under an "organic" label, but otherwise you take your chances,
with labeling declared
illegal

becauseit might harm sales!!
corn, wheat and soybeans are almost a sure thing, with every day more added to the list.

over a barrel
monsanto
corporation, already the largest agri-business in the u.s.a., whose publicly stated goal is to
dominate world food resources,
has already applied for patents, so far denied, for
sterile seeds
so that if "high yield" crops come to dominate the market, farmers everywhere in the world, will be forced annually to buy new seed, instead of the thousands of years old tradition of saving seeds. farmers have already been prosecuted for saving seeds from genetically engineered crops. remember that when you listen to the smooth voices on N.P.R. tell you that they're excited to to be helping stop world hunger.
among the "benefits" america is bringing to iraq are seeds that are patented because they have been genetically modified
. farmers who have gathered their own seeds for thousands of years can no longer legally do so.

even if, unknown to them, a nearby field cross pollinated with theirs they would be liable to prosecution.

we really don't know the full ecological and physiological effects of genetically modified organisms, the science is just too new, yet the u.s.a., almost alone, in the name of profit is rushing headlong with production and bludgeoning any attempts at regulation. since what should really scare you is a rogue organism that wipes us all out, you could say that  the u.s.a. is conducting terrorist experiments on its population. cross pollination of crops two hundred miles apart has already occurred, something we were assured by both the government and industry could not happen. it can take DECADES for new drugs to get approval yet these organisms are becoming ubiquitous, and nothing is labeled.

the major point here is not just that our ignorance of genetic modification is proven, but that our knowledge of how the human body works is also in its infancy, with more subtle aspects such as the
had a cough you can't explain, dizziness and lack of concentration, an odd disease with no family history of same, do you live in a community where there is an unusual incidence of childhood diseases?  if your doctor is baffled maybe you should think twice. remember the monarch butterfly (whose beautiful wings have become standard dress for protesters), which was decimated on its annual migration from eating the pollen of g.m.o.corn. yes, the evidence was ambiguous, but how far will you push the envelope of your childrens' safety? life threatening sensitivities exist not only from a genetic predisposition but can be learned by your body. corporations fight every effort of control as "damaging profits."
when it can take decades to approve drugs why is this unregulated?

"no nukes"
nuclear power is the dumbest thing to hit the planet since oil tanker spills became common. we've been lucky so far, and you can rest assured that is the only reason we all aren't all mutant or dead. the court cases have been endless where manufacture and maintenance have both been  impossibly inept but also that cover ups are common, with the fox guarding the chicken coop. it's not the technology, it's the people who own it. but anyway, do we really need endless supplies of electricity to support the dominant consumer life style? maybe "back to the earth" is starting to seem more reasonable to mainstream society. we just don't need this stuff. an even bigger idiocy is that since the inception of the nuclear industry,

no plans have ever been made
for the disposal of radioactive waste.
one recent proposal had a waste dump situated next to a river with only an artificial berm between them. what has become a standard doctrine is
 "we'll bury it deep underground."
yet no scientist in his/her right mind can claim certain knowledge that an earthquake or simple fault line would not drain the waste into the aquifers, the ground pool reservoirs of water, poisoning the planet forever.

do you think the government is on your side? when the army subcontracted a company who dumped radioactive waste
into a river,
the DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
successfully faught both civilian and state lawsuits.

when will you have enough of these
idiots?
remember Three Mile Island.
remember Chernobyl.

tobacco companies
- the best example
there have been at least       50 years of lies from tobacco companies that have

airlines

on august 3, 1981, president reagan, after praising striking workers in poland, fires 12,000 striking air traffic controllers and decertifies their union, all because the airline industry is "too central to the economy to be disrupted." because they are under the continuous pressure of assuring the safety of tens of thousands of people daily, air traffic controllers have the highest incidence of alcoholism and suicide of any profession. the major point they wished discussed in contract negotiations was not higher pay but the documented growing impossibility of preventing accidents, due to increased air traffic.
now that makes sense, ignore the threat to human life and crush those concerned with safety!!!!

food industries
since the beginning of the u.s.a. a diet of
meat, milk, sugar, bread and salt
has been the norm. in the korean war autopsies of solders in their early twenties discovered overwhelmingly the arteries of old men near death.

legal
by law
in the u.s.a. a food can be labeled "pure" if it contains only 51 percent of the original plant or animal!!!  that major brand of peanut butter you love is most likely 49 percent "hydrogenated" oils -  inert, artery clogging waste.

it is legal to say, in prominent lettering, "made
with 100 percent real fruit, milk, etc...", which is nothing other than semantic deception.

actions that involve
"processing" have been carefully and legally jimmied to not even be shown on labeling. there's a little extra oil in that peanut butter - counting millions of jars that comes to a substantial  gain in profit

manufacturing processes leaves chemicals –  that are all hidden by legislation passed through intense lobbying,
and are not legally required to be on labeling.

             remnants of processing.
           ingredients below legally “acceptable” level.
normal processing events – in expeller pressed oil great heat is generated – which produces carcinogens.
           conditions around factories.
           sanitary measures leave residues.
shelf life is increased by adding chemicals - if there's a lot then it's on the label.
cleansing agents used in maintaining equipment.

hunger is artificial
.

where previously hunger was caused by the vagaries of weather for farmers, or discrimination against a group or the disadvantaged,  now production is ever more concentrated into a few hands, while at the same time massive waste has become the cultural norm. very few people understand how intense these two realities are. collectively the businesses and people in towns, not even large cities, throw away each day enough food to feed hundreds of families, hundreds of tons. expensive specialized foods have been propagandized into being the only acceptable diet and repulsive "junk foods" designed for a very dubious pleasure or processed into unrecognizability have become a major part of the average diet, while tradition bound populations waste their money when a small change would make them nutritionally rich.
there exist very simple diets
with rich culinary traditions
that provide every nutritional requirement,
but "its not for me" is simply accepted  as a reason to literally slowly kill whole generations. the truly poor of the benighted "undeveloped" countries would, if they could but spend a day in the u.s.a., be amazed beyond comprehension at
how much better they eat at home.
the economic, shipping, and processing requirements of mega-corporations as corporations have so overwhelmed production that it is almost impossible to obtain fresh food, and variety has steadily shrunk to less than
thirty basic foods in a world where there are tens of thousands
of edible materials - animal, plant and mineral, and traditional and developed cuisines are absolutely amazing! have you ever had a home made sauerkraut or ice cream or a three day borscht? yummmy!!!!  if you're too lazy to learn to make it yourself the only way you'll taste, for example, real french or chinese food is at a very very expensive restaurant where you pay more for glamor and prestige than the food.

photo of huge butter storage in germany.

prices
, availability and unbelievable government policy make
artificial shortages. farmers have been paid by the government for, now, generations

not to grow food!!
both the government and businesses have massive storehouses of food that is let to rot. and why are these things done? because, we are told, in the greater scheme of things that we are too naive to understand
availability and lobbying control prices,
seen as a major factor in economics,
the sole prerogative of governments.

unnatural farming
the few foods that do remain in use, in order to survive shipping, are harvested before they are nutritionally mature and are treated with
preservatives and coloring
agents in a addition to the
pesticides and "fertilizers"
used to grow them. some people with pets refuse to eat bananas, the most ubiquitous fruit, but purchase them for the skins which they put on their rugs to kill fleas!!

as said earlier, corporation are the direct descendants of a royalty that, while hiding behind prestige, had their origin in marauding despots. "favors" are the standard practice among large economic concerns, with crushing the opposition the major goal, not whatever spurious "service" they provide.
get that into your head.
you are very naive if  you don't realize that serious repercussions await those attempting to circumvent  "the way things are." just try being a small farmer or a whistle blower in a large corporation or the average worker working
under conditions most people would find bizarre
- meat preparation and packing of any sort causes carpal tunnel syndrome and the constant cold and wetness cause a host of illnesses like and things less well known, sores and pneumonia often becoming chronic.
severed fingers are common.

these jobs are taken by the very poor and you better not complain. had a delicious ham lately? Kentucky Fried Chicken has an official policy of purchasing the only the lowest grade chickens, those with tumors, discoloration and obvious signs of over long storage. how has this been possible for the life of the company? don't ask and don't raise your head and especially don't try to get the government involved.

you might lose more than your job.
one woman who complained about conditions in a meat processing plant had her car bombed, and was thereafter followed around by company thugs "for her own protection".
yet:
and:
in relation to a artificially restricted diet,

it takes 16 pounds of grain
to make one pound of meat.
the ratio of waste in fish farming is 1 to 3, and the fish are nowhere near as healthy as natural fish. genetically modified fish have been often been able to escape their farms, breading with the natural populations.

real food in america? its not likely.  what was once common in every
"kitchen garden"
is now forgotten. freshness is the key to a healthy, enjoyable diet. food is found only in "supermarkets" and you can't tell cinnamon from thyme because it is months or years old and always dried. in winter, even home dried spices are better than that produced by corporations. just a handful of seeds will supply you for a year and a very small plot of land can change your conception of a good meal forever. in most parts of america not only are you forced into this artificial paucity at home, you can't even find a real restaurant, foreign or otherwise, only "steak houses" and really bad chinese food, if you're lucky.

there is code in Word that identifies the user.
just a little touch of nazi in there, bill? in a sane world this wouldn't matter. you can trace document routes and computer problems. but in the real world...

bill became the richest man in the world by convincing idiot businessmen that he was indispensable. now he's running scared because of shareware.

he uses his money to promote the usefulness of computers to education, but it is

just more sales promotion.
he donates messed up computers to poor neighborhoods, with the proviso that they have his name prominently displayed and the legal injunction that repairs not be attempted to faulty programs. many of bill's donated computers end up sporting plasticized notices that you "use at your own risk". thanks bill.

a cogent list of why microsoft stinks:
  1. the myth of a lone creator. bill isn't dumb - he did go to harvard - but he didn't write all the code. he's an administrator sucking up other peoples talents.
  2. the OS (operating system) for windows is so filled with unnecessary code that it takes up half of your hard drive, making it hard to do tasks that require a
lot  of memory. the code is full of unnecessary glitches that drive you crazy and aren't covered in manuals.
  3. following general industry practice, there must always be a new version to snare the customer,  but computers are a field where simplicity is the best       insurance of functionality.
  4. even at his invite-only preview demonstrations Windows has crashed multiple times. this is a joke.
  5. viruses, an entire new type of thievery/disruption and the whole industry to combat it are based solely on bill's unwillingness to revise old code, where the errors are built in. Macintosh users don't get viruses because the OS is based on shareware - a community based  FREE project with endless  "debugging." macs cost more simply because they have the minority share of the market.
  6. he puts his massive fortune into legal trickery to preserve his monopoly, prolonging fights others would have seen as unethical, and has done all he can to
denigrate "shareware", a totally superior concept.
  7. to the purist his most egregious  deception is by promoting Windows as a universal tool, thereby hiding the inherent beauty and power of programmable   computers. bill sure wasn't the one to write Mathematica, or even steve jobs' graphics program. most people don't know they have

    worlds
sitting in their laptops. they're used as word processors, business "spread sheets", or  appointment calenders!!!!  this is like using a 747 airliner to go to the corner  for  milk!!
  8. among his many self aggrandizing charity donations, bill also gave ten million dollars to the Discovery Institute, whose sole purpose is to champion "wise   use" -  to repeat, the belief ostensibly based on the bible that the world exists exclusively for human use, in an effort to fight ecological laws. a very thin coating of  deceit. see "earthfirst!" in the reading list.
  9. on the front page of the latest version of his e-mail service you find slick adds reinforcing all the worst aspects of popular culture:
                 consumerism gone wild,
the distraction of "entertainment" and adoration of entertainers,
"wise" hints and opinions about surviving in a random, top heavy economy

and, this is the best:  advertisements for "personal contacts," which are nothing more than cleaned up, prettied up
                                                          PORNOGRAPHY.
they 're called "personal adds" but somehow all the pictures you see are of scantily clad women.
lately, begining in about 2004, these have become much less prominent.

let's say "clashes" heavily

recall, this is a person who spends millions of dollars just on the logo and start-up sound for each new version of windows. how many people would that feed?
