"we cannot hope to build a better world
without improving the individual."
- madame curie

how about schools?
schools can only do half the job - while home life can make or break a personality. schools can't compensate for a home where education is not valued, nor by itself curb random disrespectful or violent behavior. the "best case" where a school is highly disciplined is often where horrible secrets are hidden.

the rich are poor
people who are poor will hate these words, but the rich have their own kind of hell. they've  never been hungry and don't know the mind numbing aspect of labor, but to an amazing degree they share in all the disappointments, perversions and crimes of other classes of society. alienation is the major disease and ruined families abound. when every whim is granted, often death is the sure result. the privileged often go to superior schools, but often not and any education is not motivated by the heart but simply the learned desire to be part of the "rat race." most little kids of the rich are a pretty lonely lot. there is a fantastic submergence of the privileged in distractions and the pursuit of prestige and popularity. often these people, as early as middle age, find themselves irresistably overcome by aimless boredom, spending their time sittingin their luxeryt home or on an exclusive beech, just waiting to die, looking twenty years older than their age. meanwhile the  middle and poorer classes are mired in tradition and lack the simple insights that would allow them to prosper.

for both, ignorance is not a lack of knowledge but patterned thought.

unabashed
then again, one rich friend of the famous american diarist edmund wilson, when asked about the Great  Depression remarked, "the poor? you can put them all on a raft in the ocean and sink it." nice guy.

numbers and tools
within a single region the formation of an underclass, any underclass, can
only be the result of attitude - leaders can't do all that. their place is "obvious" and when challenged is backed by crude science or force. denial and dismissal are the two greatest tools of attitude, allowing complacency to hide even from its own fear and anger. truth is "annoying" and makes people "uncomfortable." at its worst, genocide and greed have always been popular.

we're so special
disallowing countries that have been totally brutalized by dictators or poverty, travelers and visitors almost universally say america is incredibly neurotic and unfriendly, embodying the "white man's disease" of alienation, wherein the dehumanizing others is NOT EVEN NOTICED.  simultaniously, americans arrogantly treat people from europe, who aften have kitchen gardens older than the usa, and culture that stretches back a thousand years, as if they were annoying peasants who don't have the sense to conform. many europeans have a better command of english than americans. see "american pictures" in the reading list, specifically the explanatory note. throwing away food in monumental amounts is "normal," no matter how many are starving, and black people are downright invisible.

g
giacometti, a world renowned swiss artist who lived from 1901 to 1966,

perfectly and painfully captured the attenuation and starvation of the soul
caused by moden society and
described by the existentialist philosophers.

the whisper and the iron hand of conformity
a whisper, the implication, just the hint, of socially unacceptable behavior can destroy a person’s life, livelihood and family. there is absolutely no use to protest, affirm or deny. nothing has changed for thousands of years, and any surface layer of kindness is irrelevant. the whisper is god.

you should just know better
these are the foundation words of untaught social control, expressed in beetle-browwed seriousness, accompanied by a serene indifference to contradictions.

politeness means saying one thing and meaning another, never saying the truth, and never harsh realities, which make people “uncomfortable.” manners, mere ritual as different from sincerity, are enforced with social pressure. reputation, what people think of you, instead of integrity or any intrinsic property of personality, has more power than truth – rumor  and insinuation are absolute king. for a man this is a straight jacket, for a woman it’s hell. having money, or  prosperity, is valued more than character. honesty is behavioral and hence null - people walk around a corner and behave quite differently, and are accounted proper in both situations. honesty is quite different from character, and not much use against the dishonest on any scale, whether personal or criminal/government.

social distaste
even just an encounter with the police, stepping out of your social class, defying respectability defined as conformity – all are seen as unbearably embarrassing. for the rich, anything to do with “commerce” is distasteful. yet for ages the commoners are titillated by news of their betters.

sickness hides in propriety.

hurt the different one
anyone out of line,” either by speaking the truth or just having their own personality, is not just wrong but outrageous,” not to be taken seriously. so much of humor involves someone being hurt or being made to look ridiculous. lets remember that at one time it was acceptable to make fun of cripples. there is endless talk of who has done what to whom, yet people refuse to simply disengage from the ones they complain of. besides the reality of the system”, there are so many mean spirited “nice people - don’t get on their bad side - and just plain bastards who don’t have the power necessary to bring themselves notice, so many characters and sick puppies - a pleasantly sane english idiom meaning someone who is hurtful through lack of development, not intent -  unaware of their potential, and veritable multitudes whose seamed faces and plodding gait reflect their lack of hope, who's goofy "out-of-sinc" expressions belie emotional poverty. this is not pejorative, rather it is the result of seeing people as economic units. only recently has alienation been recognized as having effects equal to trauma, if more slowly progressing. it gives executives high blood pressure, brings housewives to abuse medications, and causes teenagers to suicide. teenager have "personality problems," it's never the parents' or societiy's fault. yet as part of popular culture, it is accepted as civilized to have every tragedy commented upon in a thousand variations of cynicism and trivialized in cheap art. violence and arrogance are glorified. people complain about authorities but INDIVIDUAL GARBAGE is as horrible as industrial pollution, 200 hundred million tons a year, and the proportion per person is rising by the decade - most urban air pollution comes from cars. think about redwood furniture or decorative mulch: something hundreds of years old and fantastically beautiful died so you could have a decoration that will last a few years. is there anyone less trustable than a car mechanic? in russia people don’t even bother with doctors and are used to cement houses with steel doors and still being burglarized.

"a heavy wooden collar"

three sides to a coin
(1) i just don't care
in 1964, in the earliest documented incident of urban alienation, which spawned massive studies, catherine genovese is brutally murdered on the street for over half an hour, her attacker returning twice to finish the job, and it turned out at least forty people were aware of what was going on. one said, i was tired.” this was a while ago, yet recently in canada a woman is beaten and lies in the street unrescued FOR THREE DAYS.

photo of worker ignoring a mugging right next to him.

(2) repulsive
ARMS DEALERS of all sizes, unchecked as part of free economy, have absolutely no regard for human consequences. this is a totally BIZARRE ASPECT of “freedom” under any system. why does this abomination continue to exist????????? no country has the right to call itself civilized that allows this.

(3) stigma - totally without fault
the japanese victims of the nuclear bombing of WWII are shunned by the populace and aid agencies. korean names are changed to sound more japanese. albinos in much of africa are cast out of their nations as “evil spirits.”

hellen keller and her sister.
before her amazing case, the blind were often treated as animals,

the disabled

"the only thing we have in common is our misfortune."
- disabled persons organization slogan,
  reflecting their basic humanity

"they see the wheelchair first."
- an all too common comment,
reflecting others' lack of humanity

the only reason
in america the disabled are totally stigmatized and only recently has funding allowed them to rise above poverty and total isolation, while in russia they are suspiciously absent from view, many saying they are killed at birth. good luck Stephen Hawking.
theamericans with disabilities act was passed only recently, in the year 1990, because slightly higher wages for medical aids allowed higher mobility and hence there was a huge demonstration in washington. this is the ONLY reason things changed – despite a needy population of millions. then there are all the people who park their cars in front of curb cuts and even organize  to reduce fines for parking in "disabled parking" spaces, going so far as to lobby state governments!!! its just not fair to the able bodied!!!

"what the heck, they can wait while i sit with my laptop in Starbucks, or do my shopping. i just ran across the street for a bagel."

services
how would you like it if every time you tried to do the simplest thing, there was always something in your way?
to repeat, there was a time not long ago when cripples were funny. welcome to the 21st century. do you think basic attitudes have changed in the general population? medical aids or p.c.a.s, personal care attendants, are still almost totally untrained and receive horrible pay.
often hamburger flippers at fast food restaurants make more money!! these two factors mitigate against the one quality that is necessary:

reliability.
we are talking about performing ordinary everyday functions.

technology
wheelchair technology is literally pathetic - cumbersome, finicky, easily broken, not designed to deal with inclement weather, and basically of very little use. it is very difficult to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs to the great variety of misfortunes people may be subject to. only a little innovation would make a world of difference. this is all due to the average indifferent sheep and greedy companies who are only interested in money - there is no profit in innovation.

electric wheelchairs and their upkeep are
ridiculously expesive, sold by bloodsucking profiteers.
federal funding just panders to the companies, not the people who depend on the service.

but will you be next?
not long ago there was not even any provision of public bathrooms for the disabled!!! the disabled wait and wait and wait just to perform the simplest of life's functions. throw the snow in front of that curb cut that no one ever uses.

and that is just part. still, almost two decades after the Americans with Disabilities Act, CURB CUTS ARE A MUNICIPAL WHIMabsent even around universities, old age homes and specialized housing.

g

"oh, those poor cripples. isn’t it too bad,"
is about as close as most people get to real, functional sympathy.

hello? to repeat
The Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) was adopted as law in 1990 to ensure equal access to all individuals without regard to needs related to disability. This comprehensive law focuses on a number of areas, including accessibility to and within public buildings and services.
REALIZE THAT THIS OCCURRED ONLY IN 1990, FOR WHAT IS A
THOUSANDS OF YEAR OLD PROBLEM
IF SO, DO YOU THINK THE GENERAL POPULACE HAS ANY REAL SYMPATHY,
UNTIL THEY FIND THEMSELVES IN NEED?

at least someone can see with their heart.

now back to the "normal" people:
after literally slaving and dying to build the trans-continental railway then moving on to the california gold rush, a minister gives testimony before congress that, the chinese have no souls and they wouldn’t be worth saving if they did,” and all the chinese miners in southern california are rounded up and beaten and their equipment is burned.

after the fall of the berlin wall surveys estimated that, more than in the former soviet union, up to one half of the population had been informers, and endless corridors are found beneath the city with rooms "well equipped" for torture. is it possible to lay this entirely to fear fostered by the rulers? it doesn't seem too darn reasonable.

patriotism, yuck,
proudly claims the values of god, country, system of government, family, vulnerable womanhood and the innocence of children, yet

what country says otherwise?

what is the worth of the claims of either patriotism or religion when illiterate mobs execute summary justice - killing without judicial proceedings - because of fear, oppression, taboos or just because a person is a stranger in town?  simultaneously, patronage and favors and gifts cluster around any power  - this is the background of poverty.
after all, this is only a pretty good capsule descrption of all history, the origins of modern so-called higher institutions. it is compassion that is the new name in town.

DOMINANT SHEEP

there is no consciousness of absence - when a bicycle rider is crippled or killed by a careless or drunk driver or an older couple about to retire lose their home after decades of payments when market rates or taxes change, while deaths from medical errors, a lost job or lost loved one drives someone to drink and eventually the street. a hundred examples point to a respectable lack of concern.

the dominant characteristic of mass societies is MOTION, always moving, always more babies, always more work to take up your life, and when like in a herd of sheep, a few people get taken out of circulation by accident or wolves - the abundant people with nice faces but with the souls of predators - the motion keeps endlessly on, and on and on.

don’t you think we can do better?

a "checker" crowd at an early rock concert.

government /society is one big drag
is there any doubt that the ugliest people are the only ones interested in anything so boringas government? this is not a trivial, pejoritive characterization. look at the people who are actually dominant in government, almost exclusively all are fat, pouchy, puffy, lethargic, watery eyed. the speeches they give are filled with insane lies couched in banal trivialities. their military lackies, who secretly hate their guts, are all deadened by a tradition of pointless stoicism and an incredibly shallow mythology of "manhood." there is no place for real brains in the military - if they had to invent their own weapons they'd still be throwing rocks.

ignorance HATES intelligence

and will do anything to maintain its power. yet is there any other possible thesis than that so many hurtful things happen in the world because the general level of the populace is so low?

it says, work will make you free.”  - enough said.
THE CULT OF WORK

"god respects me when i work, but loves me when i sing."

your life crippled by your “daily task,”
your strongest need is to be respectable.

but if just one thing goes wrong...

what is it - really?
work is taken by many, but by no means all, peoples ancient and modern as of obvious intrinsic worth, no matter how bored or oppressed they are, no matter the rate of exchange. it’s fine as part of a healthy life, but it should not be
worshiped. how many jobs provide anything really necessary to someone’s existence?

darn few.

the term fellahin is derived from the word for egyptian peasant but in a sociological sense means a mentality that knows only work and resents all change, even of betterment. people who value culture in all it’s aspects understand not only it’s daily value but how difficult many aspects of culture are to create and maintain. amber waves of grain are very beautiful, but they shouldn’t exclude the cezanne or matisse in every one of us.

too far
construction workers are proud of their true blue macho american attitude, thinking of themselves as a major bastion of conservative values, yet 60 percent suffer from disabling back and knee injuries that destroy their later years. “it takes me fifteen minutes to drive to the store and half an hour to get out of the truck. the wife gives me hell for not listening to the doctor.”  not real bright.

the influence of unions
it’s true that unions in some very large professions have just become one more abusive aspect of the system, including mafia control, but consider what existed before unions: no safety or health regulations, no standard wages – you take what you get or starve, you work continuously – no weekends or holidays, no liabilitry for health or accident – you get sick or lose a limb under atrocious conditions and not only is there no compensation but you lose your job, and your family is destitute, you were not even allowed time to go the bathroom. this is all something to be proud of?

talk about attitude and semantics
when most people ask, "what do you do?" what they really mean is not what do you enjoy or care about or what do you devote your life to, but, what do you do for work? what form of slavery do you subscribe to?

examples
"class differences in england are about what they were in victorian times. no man on wages has hope of ever saving enough to buy a place of his own."

it literally happened. it's not a figure of speech."

what a magnificent painting by a master.

 read on.

lace, one of the nicest aspects of cloth making, has traditionally been made by the very poor, restricted to specific but large areas of europe. to the buyer it is a refinement, but to the maker it was endless arthritic toil causing near sightedness. a more modern version was "typewriting for hire." both of these slave like jobs were seen as "an aid to the poor."

"it would not be unusual for twenty thousand women in a single city to be making lace for sale. it was an occupation that brought in little money for the worker, but these were desperate times and that little was sometimes all that staved off starvation."

an endless foolish "system"
pay for something you
need, then pay for something  you want. one thing is sold many times and each time the price goes up - but does the value?this is the nature of all commerce and it makes absolutely no sense. this is what "work" is based on.

everything you see, everything you innocently grow up with

as normal, all the "artifacts" of civilization, are related to nothing but work. doing something for thousands of years doesn't make it right.

in a very small nutshell - which is all it deserves

everyone works for someone else, when simple cooperation would be much saner.

when industries become large, they become dependant on two things – the endless breeding of the common man and rampant consumerism.
mindless consumerism is avidly promoted by those in power, because their power is based solely on the small person’s foolishness. more houses, more stores, more warehouses, more organizers, more fuel for it all, more raw materials, MORE AND FASTER CHANGING TRENDS OF STYLISH PRODUCTS.

how many “products” are ESSENTIAL?
how many are absolutely trivial?
how many break down right away?
how many have the beauty and functionality

of traditionally made objects?

how long has it been since you’ve seen a really beautiful article of clothing? how many people today know a single thing about the fascinating arts and crafts, sports or music of the past? how can people trapped in soullessly efficient grocery stores understand the INCREDIBLE SUBTLETY of, and GREAT SKILL required for, and SATISFACTION of traditional cuisines. meanwhile, some people are not just rich, or even super rich, but have more money

    than you can comprehend.

an insane abstraction
THE “MARKET
when things are sold again and again, they become an ABSTRACTION, and the “market” of these abstractions becomes itself a mammoth industry. there ceases to be ANY connection between producing an article and its price.” everything becomes hidden behind a FOG OF SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, when in truth these highly respectable “gurus of industry” –

politicians
industrialists
bankers
insurers
analysts
lawyers
advertisers
middle men

produce absolutely nothing.
what is the meaning of your little job in comparison?

it doesn’t matter if you:

- are a divorced executive with high blood pleasure

"hypertension" is a medical condition wherein the blood pressure rises and does not come back down. it can be treated either with drugs or, preferably, a very serious program of relaxation. people with advanced cases look red in the face, and for these people the prescription is what has come to be called the "businessman's vacation." hypertension KILLS.

- realize your job is pointless, producing nothing that will be of use
- were raped at five years of age, now grey haired, you daily fight off suicide, but still go to work
- are a racist planning your next murder
- a boss whose only pleasure is to browbeat or fire poor employees
- a child in any part of the world forced to work endlessly for a pittance, always hungry, back and fingers already arthritic
- are a human workhorse who eats and sleeps only to go back to work, never knowing culture or human contact
- are starving and you can work for giant agribiz companies, as long as you don’t complain about toxic chemicals and slave like condions
- are black, you can always find work cleaning floors, houses, offices and hospitals or baby sitting for whites
- have brown skin, you can do yard work or clean subways across the nation
- spend your life in a mine, never seeing the sun, your lungs becoming more damaged by the day, eventually dying
- are educated and can provide luxuries for your children but your boss makes millions off of your work
- are an arms dealer, and responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands
- a farmer whose body is broken by endless toil sun up to sun set
- one of generations of fishermen lost at sea
- are in finance, marketing, insurance or advertising and can control others' lives with your wealth, yet feel totally
  useless
- devote yourself to worthwhile endeavors yet perpetually hit the glass ceiling of bigotry, nepotism or old money
- suffer from a genetic accident that lowered your i.q., or you just come from an inbred community - like much of the
southeast u.s.a., where the average i.q. is 80, which is barely functional -
and will never be able to enjoy culture.
this LINK is scary all by itself.
- thousands of years ago, if you can make pots, bread or cloth that you can trade, even if you have no teeth

-  work hard were there isn't or wasn't compensation, and when you lose a limb at work you lose your job and your family starves
- your hair is white and you wonder where your life has gone

...but if you Work, bow to the twin gods of self respect and misery, then everyone knows you are a good person, and prosperous nations in their surveys will count you as living well.

money is never innocent. on any level it translates as power over others.

woman in "stockade" made of money.

the end result
all "civilizations" and all their elaborate mechanisms of relationships are based on
BRUTE SURVIVAL AND FEAR.  "history" as it is invariably taught is about wars and economic strife. the "real world" that children and other romantics are told "to get used to" is in reality not just horribly boring, but killing to the spirit, an eternal distraction from even the smallest internal needs, until the spirit turns to hatred of the world and especially anyone who has preserved their joy.

the cruelest joke played by this myth
many people approaching old age look forward to not working. yet even those subjected to unending drudgery or even horrible hazard, when the time comes they feel rudderless and useless, never having known anything else, and will return even to jobs they hate.

is this the best we can do for each other as human beings?

In the U. S., the popular media refer to the two-week vacation.. However, vacation time is often tied to seniority and many workers have to work up to that amount of time.

The chart below outlines average vacation days at 1 year of service for various establishments in the u.s.a.:

 Employer  Vacation Time
Medium and Large Private Establishments  9.6 days (1997)
State and Local Governments  12.6 days (1998)

men are cripples
since emotion is taken as a sign of weakness, it is standard in many societies for men to have literally no experience expressing emotion or dealing with their own or others'. by extension this includes anything refined, i.e.,
most of civilization. even basicly decent men are useless in intimate relationships and require a very understanding partner, one willing to coddle them, when the children come, into realizing that their chldren need them. many reach the grave in total isolation. to illustrate the dominance of this pattern, consider that most men even when faced with a serious illness are totally incapable of discussing with a doctor what they see as only a weakness. men must have no faults: they don't need to sleep or eat or rest. they can do any work or lift anything or deal with any situation
most men, the educated being no exception at all, so obviously struggle in emotional situations, they might as well carry a sign saying,I don’t understand. we’re not talking about me.when they do try to compensate, it’s with a crude, “here, let me do it,” or with forced humor that falls flat.

"why did she leave? i only hit her a couple of times. well, maybe more. i never talked to my son and now he's dead. all my friends live alsewhere now. i still lift weights but have a hard time putting the gym shorts on. people say i talk too loud but i don't understand. i'm no longer a man after my accident. there's a few gray hairs showing up. maybe another beer will help."

all i am is my body
age is a dreaded disease that makes a woman worthless and a man distinguished. for women appearance is everything, and they must be thin or they are emotionally abused from the earliest age by all parts of society.

literally a hidden plague,
while also being the most unreported crime.

as stated in the initial paragraphs on "attitude," society's answer to everything is, "everything is all right. you're the problem." the classic paradigm of the double standard toward women is angel/whore, father/rapist. women receive courtesy and preference while men take a woman by force but a non-virgin isn’t fit to be a wife. it can’t be questioned that he’s a good family man. it has been and still is the armchair philosopher's repulsive classic paradigm that, "women marry for 'security' in exchange for 'favors'" and "a woman's appearance is all that matters." while throughout the primitive world sexual mutilation is used to control women. in the u.s.a. there is a clear correspondence, on a state by state basis, mostly in the south, between opposition to abortion and an incredibly low age of consent. does a girl of 13 have enough self possession to even seek counseling, much less an abortion, especially in a predominately poor, rural population? is there an uglier fact than what this says about the minds of the people?   until recently no one has cared to notice that there is a world sex trade that preys on the destitute, with a HUGE PERCENTAGE BEING CHILDREN. immigrants seeking refuge from repressive regimes or just poverty are captured and coerced. conversely, anyone with a plane ticket can have sex with kids. in the u.s.a. all types of pornographic business easily reach an income of 8-10 billion annually, topping the income of major corporations. an easily ignored statistic is that the internet, the wonder of modern technology, is 90 percent pornography.

PORNOGRAPHY
there is nothing innocent or harmless to pornography.

how can it be anything but the background for abuse,
rape, murder and every other form of degradation. look
at the sweet faces in the book cover that ends this
section, then think of lives destroyed.

“this is my rifle,
 this is my gun
one is for killing,  (hand on rifle)
the other for fun”   (hand on crotch)

laws eviscerated by attitude
while in the culture at large, "boys will be boys" was the most common cheerful reaction  to just about anything a man did. until recently  sexual harassment wasn't even noticed, much less illegal. now it can be prosecuted, if you can prove it, have the money and time to do so and can protect yourself from retaliation. is it a wonder that most women do not?  how can a  woman establish career credentials when sexual harassment makes her a

MIGRANT WORKER?

these women are among tens of thousands kept in rape camps during the war in bosnia.
by the way, russians saw intervention in the bosnian genocide as "imperialist aggression."

after a recent group of army domestic murders, an official messenger walks up and without preamble coldly informs a woman that her daughter is dead. when she starts screaming, he quickly walks away. no one is given any counseling or informed of programs or benefits. all later assigned personnel are inadequate to deal with the situation. is this the attitude of the greatest country on earth, their system? recently a woman at stanford university - see below - who had fought the “old boy” network for decades and was literally about to became head of the surgery department gave up from pure exhaustion and disgust.  in texas a woman senior judge who was attempting to reform the domestic abuse court system was arrested in handcuffs during a court proceeding for violating rules of order.

do these incidents form a pattern?
you bet they do.

foot binding

foot binding was hundreds of years old, but evolved relatively recently in chinese culture. it began as a way of keeping women from escaping intolerable conditions, and evolved into a totally acculturated aspect of eroticism. top left. doesn’t this painting seem romantic? not when you’re crippled for life. top middle. an x-ray of a bound foot, some of which were as short as three inches. top right. this person does not seem overjoyed with life. bottom left and right. the beautiful shoes worn by upper class women.

so much for communism - very recently in china
a man literally abandons his wife to poverty, taking up with another woman. he is good friends with the police so when she lodges a complaint they continually harass her. because of traditions supposedly ended by the communist revolution  the shame of the situation is hers and not her husband's and she is shunned by all acquaintances and employers. when she travels to beijing, the capital city, to take her case to court an official says,"lets discuss this in the courtyard," and then he beats her senseless with a bat and she is permanently disfigured and crippled and now homeless.

the noble savage
in some indigenous cultures of south america in order to make a woman obedient she is repeatedlychoked over days until she is almost dead .

always alone
"' that's horrible' she said, on seeing the

burns on my body inflicted by my lover.
no one had ever said that.

the smallest sympathy in a world of indifference made all the difference."

                         - andrea dworkin in "heartbreak" - see the reading list

a woman is killed every five minutes
-
more than one third by someone she knows. in 1990 the american medical association said the percentage had risen to one half.
of these three quarters are mudered after

  1. a seperation
  2. a divorce
  3. filing for divorce
  4. filing for protection.

a piece of paper does not stop a murderer
then there is the  modern idiotic travesty of the legal "restraining order." most women who are killed by their lovers are killed after a restraining order is given. in other words, it really is worse than useless. few people comprehend the crushing primal fear of being hunted and never free. only a fool thinks a person of limited or no resources can effectively hide

and why should she have to?

no place to hide
though it may seem obvious to the naive, it really is almost impossible to "disappear". this has been proved over and over. if the man has all the time in the world, and the help of his friends, he will eventually find the woman. small resources and contacts accumulate, rumors and leads are followed up one by one. do you want to abandon all your friends in order to be safe? the biggest hitch is that in most states it is illegal not to register your children for school.

a man has no responsibilities
the most cruel simplification of the indifferent is: "why doesn't she just walk away?"
but traditional society is still very strong, where a woman is economically dependent on a man. many people in relationships, especially if their own upbringing has been emotionally turbulent, become unreasonably though sincerely emotionally dependent, seeking only what every human wants, human contact. this is an overwhelming force, the same one that leads ghetto dwellers from shattered families to join gangs. even more important:

what does she do with the kids?

faced with all of these realities, most women "choose" to live with brutal husbands out of

STARK FEAR.

why would a woman continually have relationships with or marry men who abuse or beat her?
the answer is ridiculusly simple: when you've known nothing else, you think its normal.

there are no class distinctions in abuse.

products of hell - damage for generations
a young teenager sits in a city park and in his pack are
two litre bottles of vodka, one empty, yet he shows no effects. in answer to the stranger he says, "my mom has had six "husbands" [in quotes] and six kids. when she was thirteen she was raped by a priest. now she's with a city policeman who beats her. i don't understand why she wont have anything to do with me."

birth - the twisting of a spiritual act
medicine is about money, not people
. hysterectomies, cesarean sections, mothers and babies drugged senseless during birth, drugs given to "stimulate" birth.
these have all been proved to be absolutely unnecessary in most cases yet they are rampant in the u.s.a. hysterectomies were simply a blanket response to all "female complaints". stimulant drugs are used simply because surgeons are payed per operation, which is also affected by operating room turn over rates. an "external version," manipulation to correct a breach birth, the usual motivation for a cesarean, is standard practice for midwives and was widely practiced in the u.s.a. until the 1950s. recall the opening paragraph in the section on "medicine". both traditional cultures and other industrial nations view and treat birth as a natural and interactive process. unique to the u.s.a. is the idea that medicine is the sole purview of a specialized technician. humanity has been replaced with authority based on the drama of surgery and crises pathology that sees the patient as helpless and uninformed and in the hospital is denied common humanity, relinquishing normal responsibilities to self and others, literally beneath notice. birth is a procedure and not the most personal of acts affording ultimate satisfaction. it is separated from every day life and the normal company of others, including family, is denied to the mother.  drugs are almost always given, regardless of whether they are wanted. in this area especially, expectations and atmosphere do effect physiology. because of the american attitude the hospital is a place fraught with a feeling of crises, busy, noisy and prone to hysteria, crowded yet promoting a feeling of isolation. in various surveys it has been found that in the absence of a human presence and familiar surroundings fetal deaths, still births, prematurity, neo-natal deaths, arrested labor and fetal distress all increase, while the as use of forceps or an epidural rise - prematurity rises by fifty percent, while neonatal deaths triple. a "duala" is a professional but personal aid who may talk with the woman, rub her back and do other "womanly" things. in their mere presence the duration of labor more than halves from 19.3 hours to 8.8 hours. unexpectedly, it was found that even a passive but friendly observer lowers cesarean rates. because of atmosphere alone american women feel more pain, yet because pain is officially measured by machines the women is put in the unbelievable position of convincing her doctor of the need for drugs. the u.s.a. is historically almost unique in outlawing midwives.

loss of love
most importantly
, drugs for pain given to a mother routinely or on order instead of with need are passed on to the baby. thus, both mother and child are too groggy to experience the "bonding" that has been proven to strongly
effect the emotional development of the child.

at one modern hospital, after amazing success rates like those mentioned above over the course of a year, the midwife program was terminated after opposition from the state medical association. holland, which provides the option of midwives and home births, has the lowest mother/child mortality in the world.

we're so modern
in afghanistan a woman is HUNTED for hundreds of miles on foot escaping capital punishment for refusing an arranged marriage, and finally finds refuge and escapes the country. this is the true meaning of “protecting our womanhood.” aboard a scientific research vessel sailing from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in massachusetts, one of the major centers for such research in the world, a woman scientist is violently assaulted. no one aids her and no formal complaint is issued. the russians boasted of putting a woman in space but in revealed private statements members of almost the entire space program made and derogatoryscatological remarks about her. “its not a woman’s place.”

you are essentially property.

yet into the 50s and 60s, almost fifty years later, a woman could not get a bank loan unless it was signed for by her husband. no loose single women need apply. yet rape in marriage was not illegal until the 1960s.

a different kind of slavery

don't they look so happy?
this quote and cover are from the absolutely amazing book

"the prizewinner of defiance, ohio," by by terry ryan, the subject’s daughter.

she displayed incredible talent and indomitable kindness.

what could her life have been like in different times?

in post-depression america she raised ten children with an incorrigible, severely alcolic husband who provided almost no money, and who even took out a second mortgage without telling her. she twice saved the family from living on the street by winning contests. she, like many women in america at the time, never had a job, a bank account or knew how to drive. when she asked her priest to intervene she could smell the alcohol on his breath, and was told, essentially, to keep her place. except to go food shopping,

she never left the house.

yet, one more half a century later:

in 1966, frances conley became the first woman to pursue a surgical internship at stanford university hospital. in 1977, dr. conley became the fifth woman to be board certified by the american board of neurological surgery. from 1975 to the present, she has been chief of the section of neurosurgery at the palo alto veterans administration medical center. in 1986 she became the first woman to be appointed to a tenured full professorship of neurosurgery at a medical school in the united states. In 1988, she was appointed professor of surgery (neurosurgery) at stanford university school of medicine. in 1991, she made national headlines when she announced her intention to resign her tenured position as professor of neurosurgery at stanford university medical school in protest against the sexist attitudes of a male colleague who had recently been promoted. "this is a pervasive, global problem for women who are trying to get into professional careers," she said in an interview for Time magazine. in 1992, she received the kaiser award for excellence in clinical teaching.

dear lisa randall, recently you were present at Time magazine's centenial gala, where, we seriously doubt, there were any ordinary people invited, but where henry kissenger was a central figure. is it really consonant with feminist principles to sit next to THE BUTCHER OF CAMBODIA? on a different note, your book stinks. it is supremely disquieting that incredibly intelligent people can't write about their work without endless babbling. please, no more science for sea slugs.

health care as a right
just twenty years ago the idea that there was a connection between feminism, health care and aging would have been met with ridicule. only the hard work solely by feminists put into documented studies finally broke down ensconced attitudes in

just forty years ago in textbooks on crime, the only mention of rape was an annotation that “the f.b.i. could not find enough data to produce meaningful statistics.” in other words,

NO ONE CARED.

today most police departments have a rule that a women officer must be present when a rape is reported. what is swept under the rug is the ORIGIN of this rule. ENDLESS court battles and testimony proved that male officers at best were indifferent and at worst said,

“come on honey, you know you liked it.”

the good old days
it’s amazing the things that show up in widely separated newspapers that never get national attention. just one example is needed from the pre-feminist era: a high government official, every time he calls his secretary to “take a letter”, puts a

from the present

it's all so simple - if you don't think
men
still don’t understand how unsupported motherhood can be mind numbing - a brand new curious mind requires a lot of attention. even today they can be heard to say,

i don’t see why you’re so tired. all you do is take care of the kids.”

when all she wants, outside of a little help, is some time off and some adult conversation. recall the section on "childhood." because men are basically twits, they have no idea how to be with a child, or concern with their ultimate emotional welfare. this is the 21st century??  fooey!!

abortion
its so easily forgotten by its detractors, and frighteningly, by the naive young that original supreme court decision legalizing abortion involved a woman

who was gang raped.

not a pretty picture is it?

tradition and whole worlds of oppression
all of this doesn’t BEGIN to scratch the surface. even in developed countries there are whole worlds of emotional oppression. there is no describing the fear of a woman alone or the stigma of a single mother before abortion became legal. and elsewhere women are forced to endlessly have babies, with many babies dying, until they also die. while tradition and “religion” keep them from education and even elementary medical attention.

"old at thirty five
and
"dead."

also from the “good housekeeping women’s almanac” of 1977

a hot topic right now in islamic courts, is the tradition, thousands of years old, of allowing the family of an unfaithful women to kill her outright. it is striking, the similarity of what conservatives say in the u.s.a. about gays wanting recognition and the traditionalists in many arabic countries espousing summary murder:

"if we allow this the very fabric of society will crumble."

yet
in iran
a fourteen year old girl is abducted
and sold to a brothel.
the brothel is raided by police and
the girl is charged with "illicit sex".
she then recieves death threats from her relatives
and has nowhere to go.

makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

 g

Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was a former slave who became a preacher, abolitionist, and supporter of women's rights. she made her famous speech "Ain't I a Woman?" - retold later by frances d. gage - at a convention on women's rights in 1851 in akron, ohio.

"That man over there say
a woman needs to be helped into carriages
and lifted over ditches
and to have the best place everywhere.
Nobody ever helped me into carriages
or over mud puddles
or gives me the best place
And ain't I a woman?
Look at me
Look at my arm!
I have plowed and planted
and gathered into barns
and no man could head me...
And ain't I a woman?
I could work as much
and eat as much as a man--
when I could get to it--
and bear the lash as well
and ain't I a woman?
I have born 13 children
and seen most all sold into slavery
and when I cried out a mother's grief
none but Jesus heard me...
and ain't I a woman?
That little man in the back there say
a woman can't have as much rights as a man
cause Christ wasn't a woman
Where did your Christ come from?
From God and a woman!
Man had nothing to do with him!
If the first woman God ever made
was strong enough to turn the world
upside down, all alone
together women ought to be able to turn it
rightside up again."

as said in the section "police"
numerous court cases and memoirs detail how police regularly use their intelligence files for private, often illegal, purposes. federal agents have described how N.C.I.C data was stolen, leaked and sold, and how it was used to ruin reputations, companies and politicians.

police across the nation have been caught checking the backgrounds of attractive women, a practice so common it has it's own idiom:

*women in general, want to be loved for what they are and men for what they accomplish. the first for their looks and

*women are usually more patient in working at unexciting, repetitive tasks… women on the average have more passivity
in the inborn core of their personality… I believe women are designed in their deeper instincts to get more
pleasure out of life – not only sexually but socially, occupationally, maternally – when they are not aggressive.
to put it another way I think that when women are encouraged to be competitive too many of them become disagreeable.

GAY

there are people out there who still think all gays are slathering after their children, so it's great to see signs like,

“47 YEARS TOGETHER.”

a "general" perspective
once again - see large print section, it was eisenhower, the general turned president, that made quiet history when a self appointed committee came to him with their plan to root out homosexuals from the military. he told them to go way. europeans think americans barbaric: a tourist from the u.s.a. was delighted when she realized the man in the tailored suit standing next to her at a shop window had just quietly come on to her in three languages, and when she explained his error he politely walked away. as with racism and sexism it’s easiest to just ignore everything, denying a person's humanity. at a recent huge christian gathering where many major government figures were present it was stated simply
that

there is no gay history.”
here's a cute and accurate

PORTRAIT.

tell it to Sapho 2000 years ago and other major figures of world literature. now thanks to congress we have DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act. is this anything like the change from the Department of War to the “Department of Defense”? are these people afraid of ravening hordes? while obvious public opinion is slowly but massively turning in favor of legal rights.

rights
125 Fortune 500 corporations protect transexuals from discrimination. ibm and kodak now cover transexual medical care.

not sick
here is an audio file from N.P.R.’s show “this american life” on how the author’s father was instrumental in removing homosexuality from the D.S.M., the totally bogus bible of psychology.  it is extremely touching and an excellent illustration of how pervasive and crippling  fear  is in minorities.

DOESN'T SHE HAVE A NICE FACE?  isn't the pie an improvement?

anita bryant
of the iliterate "big hair" generation of women, a former miss america runner up, flag waving pop star wannabe and poster girl for the slavery based citrus industry, was the first modern public figure to egregiously portray gays as perverts slathering uncontrolably after everyone's children, leding the earlier rabid mobs chanting, "family values."

father, preserve me from these pie weilding preverts
at a "Save Our Children" from homosexual recruitment campaign, after being hit in the face with a fruit pie, she started to pray seconds later:

"Father, I want to ask that you forgive him and that
we love him and that we're praying for him to be
delivered from his deviant lifestyle."

for a totally amusing news article on how she's stiffed people in three states for mondo big bucks,

elsewhere
americans are so mindlessly arrogant. this is how it is elsewhere:

ADOPTION by gays is legal in: SWEDEN, NETHERLANDS, SPAIN, ENGLAND, WALES, and BELGIUM.
"STEPCHILD ADOPTION",refering to a civil union, is legal in: ICELAND, NORWAY, GERMANY and DENMARK.
in IRELAND a person can apply for adoption regardless of maritial status or sexual orientation.

while americans are jumping through hoops trying to figure how to stop all this,

right now

are fighting next to americans

the ancient greeks, endlessly praised as the founders of western civilization, originators of democracy and scientific method, and whose doctrines were fully incorporated into the catholic church, were raging gays, if only because they didn't think too highly of women. you can't teach that to little kids in american schools.

a critic of lists of famous gays, with brutal ignorance, says, "why bother?" why would little black kids want to know about martin luther king, or little girls about madame curie?

top left. leonardo de vinci. who knows? they draged him into court twice, but it would be hard to trap possibly the smartest person ever. top middle. gertrude stein. author. she held an elite salon in paris that fostered some of the greatest artists of the day. no doubt here. as painted by picasso. top right. gertrude.

second row, left. alan turing. mathametician and grandfather of information theory. he made the mistake of outing in a very consevative england.  middle left. james baldwin. author. became an expatriot in france with two strikes against him in america. middle right. najinsky.  he brought russian ballet to the world. right. eleanor roosevelt. when she got tired of the "new deal" president running around on her, she took up with one of the most famous journalists of the day, whose name, and sometimes image, was deleted from published group photos.

third row, left. oscar wilde. author and salon habitue. bookstores and theater houses are named after him, but not many bars. etc. willa cather. yup. next. the swashbuckling, tights wearing movie hero erol flynn. heavily alleged. edna st. vincent millay. yup. cole porter. talk about swing! bessie smith. yup.

fourth row, left. walt whitman. he is held to be the "poet of the country's youth." strong leanings. scholars increasingly agree. right. virginia woolf. yup. tinted images from a post card by "syracuse cultural workers".

darn - we can't say n***** anymore
it's so much easier to abuse people if you can portray them as less than human. recall, before the civil war people of african descent were held to be incapable of proper speech!!!!

pretty darn ridiculous ain't it?
yet what it comes down to is pure evil.

mathew shepard – derived from wikipedia

matthew wayne shepard (december 1, 1976 – october 12, 1998) was an student at the university of wyoming who was fatally attacked near laramie, on the night of october 6 – october 7, 1998 in what was widely reported by international news media as a savage beating because of his homosexuality. shepard died from severe head injuries at poudre valley hospital in fort collins, colorado, on october 12, 1998. his murder brought national attention to the issue of hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels. his two assailants, russell henderson and aaron mckinney, were convicted of the crime and imprisoned. henderson is currently serving two consecutive life sentences and mckinney is serving the same but without the possibility of parole.

mathew was born in casper, wyoming, the eldest son of dennis and judy shepard, he was a member of st. mark's episcopal church. he spent his junior and senior years of high school at the american school in switzerland, where it is said that he enjoyed travel in europe, having learned german and italian. after graduating in 1995, he attended catawba college and casper college before relocating to denver. he then became a first-year political science major at the university of wyoming and was chosen as the student representative for the wyoming environmental council. he was described by his parents as "...an optimistic and accepting young man ...[who]... had a special gift of relating to almost everyone. he was the type of person that was very approachable and always looked to new challenges. matthew had a great passion for equality and always stood up for the acceptance of people's differences."

shortly after midnight on october 7, 1998, 21-year-old shepard met mckinney and henderson in a bar. according to mcKinney, shepard asked them for a ride home. subsequently, he was robbed,
             pistol whipped
, tied to a fence in a remote, rural area, and left to die.
mckinney and henderson also found out his address and intended to burglarize his home. mathew was discovered by a cyclist eighteen hours later, and at first the cyclist thought that he was a scarecrow. he was still alive but unconscious.

he had suffered a fracture from the back of his head to the front of his right ear, and had severe brain stem damage, which affected his body's ability to regulate heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs. there were also about a dozen small lacerations around his head, face and neck. his injuries were deemed too severe for doctors to operate. he never regained consciousness and remained on full life support. as he lay in intensive care,
candlelight vigils were held by the people of laramie.
he was pronounced dead at
12:53 a.m. on october 12, 1998 at poudre valley hospital in fort collins. police arrested mckinney and henderson shortly thereafter, finding the bloody gun as well as the victim's shoes and wallet in their truck. the two men had attempted to get their girlfriends to provide alibis.

so far all attempts to include sexual orientation in federal hate crime legislation have failed. recently a bill passed both houses of congress but george bush has vowed a veto.

freedom from being murdered is a "special right"?
